ITD Foreign Correspondent
As some may be aware I spent five weeks on annual leave during May and June, mostly in the UK (with some side trips of course) visiting family and friends. While in London I attended the Eye for Travel - Travel Distribution Summit Europe, with a particular focus on Revenue Management. Not having a lot of prior exposure to the European market, I thought it would be an enlightening couple of days, with the potential for some good learning outcomes to bring home.

First impressions were striking for probably the wrong reasons. I know many of your properties are experiencing a downturn in conference activity this year, and the Eye for Travel attendance was down 40% on previous years. The crowd was a little sparse, but no less vocal. Those in attendance were aggressively pursuing an edge in the market to see out the GFC and it’s after effects. Perhaps, unsurprisingly, and similar to an industry day I had attended in Sydney just before going to Europe, the main focus was on how to maintain price stability in a ever-increasing discounted market-place.

Introducing the Data Team
We would like for you to meet the the backbone of ITD- the Data Team. This team of five show extreme patience and keen eyes for detail every day in cleaning the hundreds of thousands of guest history records we receive each month. But they are not all just about the data....this is a very smart group with even the full-time Team Leader studying part-time, and the other 4 are avid full-time students

  • Matt - Is the leader of the team and is always at the cinema to catch the latest flick.
  • Irvin - Is studying a Bachelor of Commerce and claims that she is the queen of Nintendo Wii.
  • Brenton - Is studying a Bachelor of Law & Justice and loves to play and watch basketball.
  • Emma - Is studying a Bachelor of Medical Sciences and loves going to gigs to listening to live music.
  • James - Is studying Public Health and is an amateur golfer.

Our Top 5

Our top flu remedies:

  • Staying at home - keep your germs to yourself!
  • Take a hot relaxing bath
  • Loads of hot tea, anything yummy which makes you feel better
  • Beanies, scarves and slippers - any excuse to rug up
  • Alcohol to suppress the flu? (apparently a GP suggested this, but we are not doctors so we take no responsibility for this handy hint)
